Electric Tankless Hot Water Heater

Buying Electric Tankless Hot Water Heaters

The Electric Tankless Hot Water Heater is an increasingly popular solution for energy and space efficient hot water heating.  An Electric Tankless Water Heater can save you money on your electric bill and at the same time supply all of your hot water needs.  First, though you must understand a few key factors to make an informed buying decision.

Consider Electric Tankless Water Heaters For Your Energy Efficient Home  By Steve Knowles
Instantaneous, or, Demand Water Heaters, provide hot water as it is needed. These tanks heat water without using storage tanks. Electric tankless systems have an electric element that heats the water.

Considerations For Buying Electric Tankless Water Heaters:
Voltages for units sold range from 110 volts to 277 volts. Amperage draw must also be accommodated for as does ensuring the circuit breakers will support the unit. It may be necessary to have a separate circuit for the water heater to operate on.

Many of these wonderful heaters have a life expectancy of 20 years or more, and, easily replaceable parts so that period of time can be readily extended. Regular water heater maintenance will help the unit last longer. The Owner's Manual will provide information on maintenance requirements. They are energy efficient and inexpensive to operate. Water temperature is raised only when the unit is activated delivering a constant supply of hot water.

Peak demand determines the amount of water needed and should be considered when purchasing an electric tankless water heater. Combine the total number of sources of hot water expected to be used at one time to their flow rates and select a unit that will supply these demands. That is the unit needed.

Some units are thermostatically controlled and their output temperature can vary based on water flow rates and the inlet water temperature.

Choosing A Electric Tankless Unit.
Not all of these water heaters are energy efficient models, and, there are many models, styles, and, designs to choose from.

Unlike gas powered water heaters, the electric type water heater can be located away from the point of water use and this eliminates hot water having to travel further losing a little more energy along the way. By locating the unit closer to the water tap the heater will instantly heat the water on demand which makes these units very practical, howeverthey produce a lesser volume of hot water.

Troubleshooting.
Before any troubleshooting is done make sure the power supply is turned off first. For units that are not supplying hot water due to a faulty electric thermostat simply replace the thermostat or the heating element.

For inadequate hot water supplies ensure the water heater is not being over taxed on water supply demands. Check the unit for crossed connections such as a hot water line that is connected to the cold water tap. Check for power and electric continuity at the lower heating element. Replace if needed but get rid of the sediment first. Should this element check out okay, examine the upper thermostat, and, replace it if need be.

If the unit has corrosion occurring inside the glass lined tank replace the sacrificial anode rod with a magnesium anode rod.

A rotten egg smell coming from the unit indicates bacteria in the tank sediment fed from decay of the sacrificial anode, fix this problem by flushing the water heater with hydrogen peroxide.

Electric tankless water heaters are very energy efficient for the most part and easily taken care of. Proper use and maintenance will allow the unit to function accordingly providing a better serving unit.
